San Gaudenzio

Late Gothic church from 1518

The ruins of the Late Gothic church of San Gaudenzio are one of the most impressive architectural monuments in Bregaglia. Legend has it that the former pilgrimage church was dedicated to a 4th century martyr who met his death by the sword. The church and its cemetery were consecrated on 13 May 1518. In 1551, during the Reformation, San Gaudenzio was deconsecrated, and subsequently used as a church cemetery before being finally abandoned in 1738.

The Legend of St. Gaudenzio

The church of San Gaudenzio is dedicated to a martyr who, according to legend, introduced Christianity to Bregaglia at the beginning of the 4th century and met his death by the sword. The pilgrimage church with its relics was built in close proximity to where the beheaded man laid his head.

Architecture

San Gaudenzio is one of the great Late Gothic church buildings in Graubünden. It follows the classical style with a single nave and indented polygonal choir. The vaults have collapsed, but the outer walls have mostly survived. They showcase an extraordinary width and height of space, elegant lancet windows with filigree fillings (tracery) as well as precise stonework.

Restoration - Conservation

In 1925, the first stabilization work of the church ruins was carried out on the initiative of the Bregaglia artist Giovanni Giacometti, and under his direction. From 2009 onwards, the urgently-needed preservation and restoration work was sponsored by the San Gaudenzio Foundation in close cooperation with the historic monument preservation authorities and the Archaeological Service of the Canton of Graubünden.

The stages of restoration

From 2009 to 2022, extensive conservation and restoration work was carried out in two stages on the San Gaudenzio church and hospice ruins. The conservation and restoration work were made possible thanks to contributions from the Bregaglia municipality, the Maloja Region, the canton of Graubunden, as well as foundations and individuals.
